News and Bargaining Update

Members of CUPE 5569,

First of all, congratulations are in order after our great victory this year after forming a new union local. We live at a time of steep increases in the cost of food and housing. We are still recovering economically and socially from the COVID-19 pandemic, a period in which many of us made significant sacrifices to deliver the best education system possible to the people of Ontario.

Despite this we are constantly faced with employers who tell us we ask for too much, that our working conditions are good enough, and the cuts and burnout are just part of the job. Forming this union is our best line of defence against backsliding, and a genuine opportunity to push for better schools for all workers and students.

New National Rep: Frank Lapensée

Frank Lapensée is now assigned the local as the National Representative from CUPE. Frank has a long history of working in organized labour and advocating for workers. He is excited to be joining the local as we work towards a strong collective agreement.

Union Local Matters

As of now we have gone through two days of bargaining with the employer and talks continue to progress. As you will have noticed, our official local number is 5569. It is important that we have the first collective agreement ratified by our members before a year passes since the formation of our union.

We will be holding elections soon for the election of our first executive at CUPE 5569. If you are interested in running for one of the executive positions, information will be shared on how to proceed to express your interest.

Get Involved

As we move through negotiations with the employer it is important that we continue to pull in new layers of workers to participate while keeping ourselves engaged. The strongest agreements across all sectors of organized labour are created when workers are united. Visible unity makes it difficult for the employer to deny us the rights and compensation that we deserve.
